NTUC Income launched the first usage-based electric vehicle cover in Singapore and needed a digital experience to introduce it. The design was built on heavy visuals and animation, which is the standard way to build a slow page. It went from concept to launch in under 30 days at a PageSpeed Insights score above 90 for desktop.
The brief asked for a landing page taking visitors through the history of electric vehicles and their place in wider sustainability. Heavy visuals and animation were the point of the design.
Heavy visuals and animation are also the standard way to build a slow page. The experience had to stay intact while the page still loaded quickly, and that trade-off is usually resolved by giving up one of the two.
3D animators and developers worked as one team, from concept through mood board and storyboard to execution and launch. Animation and engineering decisions were made together rather than in sequence, which is what let the performance target survive the design.
Built to be moved through rather than scrolled past.
Animation and engineering in the same room from concept onwards.
Including a map of every EV charging station in Singapore.
Performance is a design decision, not a cleanup task. A score above 90 on a visually heavy page is reachable when engineering is in the room during design and unreachable when it arrives afterwards.
